Our open reading period is currently closed

Transit Books publishes a carefully curated list (6-8 titles per year) of international and American literature, with a focus on literary fiction, narrative nonfiction, essay, and prose that falls somewhere in between.

Recent Transit titles include Andrés Barba's Such Small Hands, Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi's Kintu, David Hayden's Darker With the Lights On, and Wioletta Greg's Man Booker International-nominated Swallowing Mercury.

We recommend you familiarize yourself with our titles before submitting. You can find our books at your local bookstore and online, or browse our catalog on our website.

guidelines

Our reading period is open each year from May 1–June 15. Please send submissions and supplementary materials to submissions@transitbooks.org

We do not currently accept poetry submissions.

For translated works, please provide:

  • Sample translation of at least 20 pages (or full manuscript, if available)
  • Short biography of the author
  • Summary of the book
  • List of previous works translated
  • A PDF of the original language edition
  • Availability of rights, if known

For English-language works, please provide a full manuscript, along with a short biography.

There are no specific length requirements for submissions.

Translators may submit more than one sample translation for consideration.

All submissions should be double-spaced, in legible 12-point font, and provided in .doc(x) format.

Since we are a small staff, the review process for full-length manuscripts can take 3–5 months. Manuscripts that seem appropriate are given several careful reads, so we appreciate your patience during the process.
